Blog Post #3
Today, we learned how to use Google Drive. This technology was totally new to me so I found it very interesting. We learned a lot about how to make each of slides look visually nice and appealing to the audience. I also learned that the cover slide is especially important because it is the slide that the audience will be viewing the most. I also learned how to refine searches on Google Images. This was very helpful for me, because I always got frustrated with searching for the correct sizes. I learned that the minimun size for slide images should be 800 X 600 as well. In addition, the title font should be about 60 points and the subtitle should be around 36 points. This class was very useful too, because the professor told us that certain fonts are harder to read for dyslexics, and that colour contrasts are very important because many people are colour blind as well. With these facts in mind, I think I will be able to make a presentation slide that will accommodate most people.
As a class exercise, we tried creating our own slides for our topic (mine was Mexican food). This was a good activity because the professor showed us step-by-step on what should be done next. Then, when it came to our third slide, we worked on our partner's slides instead. This was a good method because I got to view what sorts of things my partner was doing and got to gain an idea from her as well. I was also able to learn how to use the chat on Google Drive, as well.
Overall, I was able to obtain a sufficient amount of information. Everything was very new to me and feel like I have a better understanding of how to make slides for presentation. I hope to gain more knowledge on this so that I can eventually complete a full presentation slide.

On December 12, 2012, we continued to focus on the topics that each student chose from the previous class (eg. Scottish independence, Mexican food, and etc). We also talked about how to effectively place the topics in order. For example, the presenter must organize the topics so that they are logical (eg. past, present, future). Additionally, the professor also explained to us that it is always a good idea to through in some jokes here and there to entertain the listeners. A boring presentation will often leave a bad impression and lead to an unsuccessful one. Lastly, he also mentioned that people tend to listen to the middle section the least, so it may be a good idea to put the least important information there. However, he also taught us about the segmentation method, which is a method to keep the topics interesting throughout the whole presentation so that the presenter can keep the listener's attention at a constant rate. I thought that learning this method was helpful because I know a lot of cases where the audience is half-asleep during someone else's presentations.
Professor Paterson also shared how he made his presentations interesting. For example, he would actually try to make the audience "feel" what it is like to be someone or to be in a certain situation. Then, we did a class exercise where each student had to think of a similar technique for their topics. The professor gave an example for the Scottish independence. He grabbed one of the student's bag and gave it to another student. This allowed the bag's owner to feel like she was untreated fairly, similar to what the Scottish were feeling. I was able to learn that involving the audience into the presentation topic is very effective and important in order to maintain concentration.
I think that this class was very helpful! I was able to learn more about how to make the presentation more interesting to the listeners. We were also able to brainstorm a lot of unique ideas with a small group about how we can make the audience to obtain a certain feeling in order to make the presentation more effective.

On Monday, December 10 2012, we practiced how to give presentations in class.
We learned that there were several points that we should make when giving a presentation.
First, we should give a greeting, thank the audience for coming to watch the presentation, introduce our names, give the topic, give our background history relating to the topic, describe the topics that will be covered, mention that there were be time for a Q&A session in the end of the presentation, and then finally, begin talking about the first topic.
The professor first divided the class into three groups in order to give presentations to each other. Then, he made the groups larger by dividing the class into two next. I thought that this class session was helpful for me because I got to practice my own presentation while listening to others as well. Also, I learned how to make eye contact with the audience because the audience had their hands up until I made an eye contact with them. Finally, we also learned that it is important to build credibility when giving a presentation. If we do not have any credibility, the audience will probably doubt the accuracy of the speaker's presentation.
In conclusion, I was able to learn that there are certain points that should be made when conducting a presentation. I also think it is important that the speaker shows confidence when speaking so the presentation will not be boring for the listeners. As well, it is important to keep in mind that the presentation starts as soon as the presenter is called on and begins walking towards the front of the room. I have to practice this because I always appear so nervous before giving a presentation!
